Need a little help choosing your category for DCBMC?
See below for descriptions and judging criteria.

Natural
Hair on top lip only, any length.
All hair more than 1.5cm from the corner of the mouth must be shaved.
Natural shaping permitted but no styling aids.

 

Styled
Hair on top lip only, any length.
All hair more than 1.5cm from the corner of the mouth must be shaved.
Styling aids permitted.

BusinessColour

A neat ‘business-like’ beard, either partial or full.
Beard to be no more than 10cm in length, as measured from the bottom of the lower lip.
Styling aids permitted.

Anything that is not a full set.
Natural shaping or with use of styling aids, whichever the competitor prefers.
Moustaches may be extravagantly styled, but beard must be a natural shape.
(‘Octopus’ is a natural shape for an octopus, but not a beard. Octopuses (octopi?) belong in freestyle.)

Natural – under 8 inches
Full set, as grown.
Beard to be no more than 20cm in length, as measured from the bottom of the lower lip.
Natural shaping permitted but no styling aids.

Full set, as grown.
Beard to be more than 20cm in length, as measured from the bottom of the lower lip.
Natural shaping permitted but no styling aids.

 

Styled – under 8 inches
Full set, as grown.
Beard to be no more than 20cm in length, as measured from the bottom of the lower lip.
Styling aids permitted.

No octopuses.

Full set, as grown.
Beard to be more than 20cm in length, as measured from the bottom of the lower lip.

FreestyleColour

Here be octopuses.
Moustache, partial beard or full beard.
Creative, extravagant or unusual styling.
Styling aids permitted and also dyes and accessories, but no false hair.

Judging

 

All of the above categories will be scored on the following criteria:

Example of category includes beard length, where stated.
If, in the opinion of the judges, your beard does not meet the length criteria for the category, you will be marked down accordingly.

 

There will be four judges on each panel.
Each judge will indicate their favourite competitor in each category, to be used in the event of tied scores. If there is still a tie, the result will be decided by rock, paper, scissors.

 

You may enter multiple categories, subject to meeting the criteria.
Competitors may only be awarded one prize – if you score in the top three in more than one category, you will receive the placing and prize for your highest score.
There is no charge for entering additional categories.

Styling aids – balms, oils, waxes, sprays, glues

For those without facial hairHandMadeColourAnything goes – dig out the craft box and use your imagination!
Knitting, crochet, macrame, Meccano, Lego, wire, string, ribbons, flowers…

 

There are two categories:
one for adults (of all genders) and one for children (again, of all genders).

 

Winners will be decided by audience reaction and host’s choice.
